Nesta edição do prêmio, quatro dos cinco filmes indicados ao Globo de Ouro de Melhor Filme são baseados em histórias reais: Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, A Teoria de Tudo e Selma. O único diferente é Boyhood, a experiência cinematográfica filmada ao longo de 12 anos por Richard Linklater.
Já em sua 72ª edição, o Globo de Ouro cumpre o papel de antecipar a disputa que culmina no Oscar, o prêmio da Academia. Pelos filmes indicados na lista, é certo prever que o Oscar 2015 terá uma disputa difícil.
A premiação acontecerá dia 11 de janeiro. A transmissão ao vivo será feita pelo canal TNT da TV paga aqui no Brasil. Tina Fey e Amy Poehler apresentarão a cerimônia pela terceira vez consecutiva.
